Property profile:
In concept, ADS Potable Water
Grout is a factory-mixed, surface waterproofing agent with cement-reactive
additives - "rigid waterproofing grout" - self-supervised in
compliance with DIN ISO 9001. The little shrinkage there is of approx.
There is little anchorage of oxide precipitation (iron and manganese).
It hardens quickly on damp substrates and also at
temperatures as low as +5° C.
The closed, even surfaces are easy to clean and
disinfect, require little maintenance, are age resistant and have high abrasion
resistance. In cases of structural changes, it is easy to repair or work over.
In General:
The KTW recommendations (German recommendations for plastics/potable
water) apply for the health rating of plastics and other non-metal materials
within the framework of laws concerning foods and commodities in potable water
areas. These recommendations are published in the German Law Gazette 20. 1977.
When testing, especially taste, odour, organic carbon content, chlorine
depletion and germ behaviour are assessed. Multiplication of micro-organisms
(germ behaviour) on materials for potable water areas is tested in compliance
with DVGW regulations, technical rules, work sheet W 270, January 1984 edition.
Potable water reservoirs are usually constructed of
water impermeable concrete but these are endangered by shrinkage cracks, construction
joints, concealed pores (germs) and lime dissolving carbon dioxide, especially
in soft water. Furthermore, acidic cleaners and greater mechanical loads when
cleaning may subject the surfaces to additional loads.
ADS Potable
Water Grout in the Kiesol System
provides a tested and approved coating method that is mainly cementitious,
giving deep protection .
The Kiesol
System can be variably adjusted to concrete quality and future load. It offers
serviceable and economical solutions.
For a correct diagnosis, a water analysis should be
ascertained as well as the type and quality of the concrete and the usual
cleaner used.
We would like to point out that discoloration may
appear when white ADS Potable Water
Grout is used on concrete made with slag cement because of an iron oxide
reaction. This is especially the case when oxidising disinfectants or cleaners
are used. Grey coloured ADS Potable
Water Grout should be used instead.
Substrates:
For cementitious coating using
ADS Potable Water Grout in the
Kiesol System with deep protection, a structurally sound, damp,
cement-bound substrate (normally concrete, but also screed and cement render)
is suitable. To expose pores, missing areas and cracks, clean first, dependent
on load, by mist blasting, water-sandblasting or in certain cases by steam
blasting. Protective measures, for example the covering of machines and
equipment, should be carried out.
Open construction joints, defective areas and gravel
pockets in the substrate are to be repaired with ADS Potable Water Grout as a mortar. After
removing rust from exposed steel in underwater areas, pre-coat with a grout
consistency, then close with mortar consistency.
Dependent on layer thickness, a lean mortar is made
with Potable Water Grout by mixing 1:1 to
1:2 with washed sand (Construction Resin Filler) for sealing coves and broken
out areas. Levelling layers (screeds, renders) should comply with KTW
requirements.
Working
Instructions:
The pretreated substrate should be damp but not shiny wet. ADS Potable Water Grout is a ready-to-use,
factory-mixed, dry mortar which is applied in an average layer thickness of 3 -
Application areas and construction of the system:
1. Ceiling and
wall surfaces not in contact with water
Substrate treatment: water-sandblasting
and mist blasting
a) Smooth concrete as of B 35
·
In this case, surface
improvement with deep protection through silicification suffices.
·
Kiesol is sprayed to saturation on the damp
substrate (at least twice).
Application rate:
b) Coarse pored and/or damaged substrates
·
Prime with Kiesol diluted with water (deep protection)
and apply grout
After the primer has been absorbed (approx.
1 hour), apply ADS Potable Water Grout
to the damp substrate in two layers, within one day. Layer thickness per
application of grout is at least
3.0
kg/m² ADS Potable Water Grout
2. Floor and wall surfaces in contact with water
Substrate treatment:
Water-sandblasting and mist blasting
a) Fine pored concrete as of B 35
·
Surface improvement with
deep protection through silicification, however, by spraying at least three
times to saturation.
Application rate:
b) Coarse pored concrete
·
Prime with Kiesol thinned 1:1 with water and.
·
Apply grout twice,
wet-on-wet in one day
The third application of grout is
executed the following day (total layer thickness approx.

3. Spraying application or when used as a filler
a) Prime with
Kiesol and water 1:1.
ADS
Potable Water Grout can also sprayed on after adding a suitable amount of
water, applying in two working operations.
Total layer thickness: max.
After 3 days at the earliest, saturate
with Kiesol.
Waiting time between the individual layers
is at least 1 day.

Technical Notes:
General technical guide lines and especially the Deutsche Bauchemie e.V.
guidelines apply.
Subsequent treatment (covering, keeping damp) is necessary for exterior
surfaces in dry, warm weather and for interior surfaces if relative humidity is
< 60%. Working temperature is at least +5° C and a max. of +30° C
(substrate). If the setting time at low temperatures takes too long, the
process can be accelerated by spraying the grout with Kiesol (silicification treatment). The amount
of Kiesol needed is increased by 0.2
kg/m² per silicification treatment. If the potable water grout is applied
without Kiesol, pre-wet the substrate
thoroughly and keep the grout moist. Never
use warm air blowing equipment!
Acidic
cleaners below pH 4 should not be used for cementitiously coated potable water
surfaces. Other cleaners should only be used in the prescribed dilution and at
the earliest after 7 days. When used in areas where water flows, e.g. spray
chambers, ADS Potable Water Grout should
be covered with tiles or coated with Viscacid Epoxy Coating TW instead.
For general information, we
recommend the IBH Code of Practice "Supplementary notes for coating the
interiors of potable water reservoirs with rigid, cementitious waterproofing
grouts".
Tools and cleaning:
